Python Job: Threat Researcher - Opportunity for Working Remote

You will be part of the NSX Threat Analysis Unit, a small team of highly skilled researchers who focus on researching, understanding, and analyzing the malware landscape to improve VMware’s capability to detect and block advanced threats.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

In the first 6-12 months, you will focus on understanding the data we collect and manage, and you will develop tools for the analysis of the data. For example, you might develop a dashboard based on ElasticSearch that will allow for the identification of attack waves, based on our telemetry. As another example, you might build a machine learning pipeline that ingests malware samples and associated metadata and provides insights about the samples (e.g., clustering, classification, etc.)

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

Your work will focus on analyzing threat data (malicious programs, documents, web content) using a variety of tools (e.g., VirusTotal, ElasticSearch).

In addition, you will be building your own tools using Python.

You will also build dashboards and graphs to describe the characteristics of the data (e.g., the timeline of a breach or the geographic distribution of a threat).

You will write blog posts and threat reports that describe your findings, usually in collaboration with other members of the team.

You will give presentations at various forums, such as BlackHat, and the Virus Bulletin Conference.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The team is led by Giovanni Vigna, who is the Sr. Director of Threat Intelligence. The rest of the team is composed of reversers, threat researchers, and threat analysts. The team is focused on research and analysis, and collaboration is a key aspect of the job.

Where is this role located?

Remote: This role is fully remote, allowing you the flexibility to work from the location you feel most productive and comfortable, or the location agreed upon with your hiring manager. You will be expected to live within a number of time zones from your team as defined by your business.
